Types of Furnaces
The first thing to understand when you start looking at furnaces is that there are actually a few different kinds. Gas furnaces are by far the most popular in most areas and this is true for a variety of reasons. To begin with, gas furnaces are quiet and energy efficient. They make use of natural gas as a fuel which is much cheaper than either oil or electricity in most areas. Particularly if you have had a gas furnace in the past and were happy with the performance you got out of it, this may be the right choice for you.
However, if gas is not a fuel option available to you, you may want to go with an oil furnace instead. For the most part, these types of furnaces are only used in areas where gas is not a viable fuel option, but they can do an excellent job of heating your home. They may not be able to reach the top fuel efficiency ratings that some gas furnaces are capable of, but modern oil furnaces are quite fuel efficient.
An electric furnace is another option worth considering. Many people prefer an electric furnace because it requires less maintenance than either oil or gas. Electric furnaces also run completely silently and donāt introduce potentially combustible fuel into your home. However, electric furnaces are typically more expensive to run than gas furnaces because of the higher price of electricity in most areas. They are quite energy efficient in their own right, though.
Interpreting AFUE Ratings
Another thing you will notice as you examine your furnace options is that each furnace is assigned what is called an annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) rating. These ratings generally range from 80% up to 97+% for the super high efficiency gas models and they describe just how much of the fuel that goes in actually comes out as heat at the end of the process.
The fuel efficiency of the furnace is certainly something you will need to consider when you are making a purchase, but be sure to consult with a professional so that you understand more clearly just what type of efficiency is right for you.
